She was going to be mad about this later. Not because of what he said but because he had the audacity to be funny. Wit and cleverness had ever been a weakness of hers and she had already proven weak to several of his charms. The gentlemanly thing to do would be to minimize those charms, Ignis, not lean into them.
"Only near?" she asked afterwards. "You'll have to teach me so I can improve. I promise I'm quite good at taking instruction when I am properly motivated. You might remember...?" Another low chuckle, this one trending more dirty than amused. "But anyway, I'll have you know I've been up for hours by now. Possibly as many as three. Waking up any earlier than this is wasted anyway. Everybody knows the world is lovelier silvered by moonlight than glared at by the garish sun. For one thing, there are fewer people about."
Ignis could pick up noises in the background, and from the sounds he heard as she moved about, he could guess that Liliana had chosen to call from from the depths of her vaunted bathtub. "I had a...frustratingly entertaining day? Entertainingly frustrating? Hmm." She debating the proper wording in her head a moment before giving up. "I have frequently read novels that were frustrating because they were bad. Some even entertainingly so. Today at the shop, I ended up reading on that managed to be frustrating because it was so good."

Although he was hardly thinking about a book.
There was a pause, as he sorted through several thoughts, really, and came out of it with just one request:
"Tell me more about it?"
no subject
It wasn't like Liliana didn't dabble with the occasional bits of blue mana via lethemancy, but honestly, there were limits. Blue didn't belong in necromancy!

And the occasional frustrated flinging of it across the room. Which had maybe happened several times during the course of her reading.
"So, now that you know I spent my day being mad at a book I was choosing of my own volition to read, I simply must know how yours was."
no subject
"That said," he added, "I can't imagine there'd be an audio version available with a voice I'd enjoy listening to even half as much as yours."
And the flattery...sat a bit differently, didn't it, with so much truth and sincerity behind it....
"As for my day? It was not nearly so vitriolic. It started at an hour I won't even dare to mention for the sake of your delicate sensibilities. A little extra time in the gym to work on my forms and a significant amount of time in the kitchen, if you could kindly restrain your shock. And then I was delving into the positively soporific matter of 19th Century military battle tactics when you called."
no subject
Liliana was just going to take it as more flattery that was her due. Because otherwise she'd have to start poking at things, like why her stomach fluttered when he said it (or when she heard his voice on the other side of the phone or why she'd decided to call tonight and how hard it had been to wait even that long...)
Yes, much better to ignore all of that completely, focus on the compliment, and listen to the rest of his reply. "Thank you for your courtesy. Hearing the actual hour might send me into a faint and that could be dangerous while in the bathtub. You'd have to trek all the way out here to save me from such an ignominious fate. And, darling, you must have something better than books about boring old battle tactics to help you sleep. You must."
no subject
And then, a pause, the kind that seemed like he was going to say something more after that, but in that hesitation, had perhaps reconsidered, pulled back, swallowed the words down before they had the chance.

gnis had rather hoped, with the distance, over the phone, that his hesitation could pass by unnoticed, and now it felt like such an awkward, unwieldy thing that it was a shock he'd ever thought she wouldn't catch it in the first place.
But even the fact that she had, and that softness in her voice...certainly made it a bit cruel, really, that the conversation could make something like that palpable, while things like skin, and hair, and lips were not.
And delayed strike was a missed strike. Hesitation turned what could be a mortal blow into just a mere nick, if even that.
Ignis cleared his throat.
"Well," he finally said, "if we're to speak more pleasant slumber than that brought on my dusty generals and stagnant prose..."

"And that perhaps," Ignis said, his own movements as he sat up from where he'd been reclined having the benefit of only quiet, silent air to go through, "with those things in mind, it is a very good thing that you called me tonight."
no subject
"I am a very good thing regardless," Liliana declared with questionable veracity. "I would never leave you to the mercies of dull prose." Drip drip drip. The sound of water droplets hitting not more water, nor floor, but flesh. "If there is a way that I can further assist..." He could practically hear the slow smile that curved her lips. "It would be my most sincere pleasure do so."
no subject
"I quite suspect," he said, "that I'll barely get a moment's peace without your...generous assistance at this point. And surely there are far less treacherous reasons to make that arduous trek than to rescue from the ignominious fate of drowning..."
no subject
A pause, while she wrapped herself in a thick and comfortable towel. "You'll forgive me if I continue my rude and uncouth behavior, I hope. Because I'm not exactly dressed." A pause. "For company, I mean."
Or, you know. At all.

At least she was still just letting tone and teasing carry her meaning. As opposed to skipping right over to using words.
Very.
Explicit.
Words.
no subject
"Should I bring anything?" Because they may be being terribly uncouth at the moment, but he was still Ignis.
no subject
Otherwise...
"Just you."
no subject
In fact, there was a good chance it was going to be somewhat quicker than it usually might have been.
no subject
Another gasp. "Feel free to come right up when you arrive."
She said, though by the time he did make it to her place, she'd be waiting by the door.
